When you're uninsured, hospitals and surgery centers often quote the book price — frequently a multiple of what they'd bill an insured patient for the very same procedure, even one paying out of pocket. It can feel like being punished for not having a policy. This tool shows you that gap for every procedure we offer.

Call (517) 759-1110The ASC (insured) and Hospital (insured) figures are our estimate of the typical commercial in-network allowed amount — what an insurer has negotiated to pay — at an ambulatory surgical center or hospital outpatient department in this region, for the same CPT code. Where available, estimates are set directly from FAIR Health commercial claims benchmarks for our region; the remainder are built from published CMS payment data (ASC and hospital outpatient facility rates, plus the physician fee) multiplied by regional commercial-to-Medicare pricing ratios from the RAND Corporation Hospital Price Transparency Study. Actual negotiated rates vary by payer, plan, and facility and are not publicly disclosed in full.
The Hospital · uninsured (list price) figure estimates the hospital's chargemaster or "list" price — what a patient with no insurance and no negotiated rate could be billed before any discount or financial assistance. This is derived from the insured hospital estimate using published research on the relationship between chargemaster and negotiated commercial prices (Jiang, Makary & Bai, Health Affairs 2022; Linde & Egede, Medical Care 2022).
The Heritage office (cash) price is our transparent bundle rate, inclusive of surgeon time, the office procedure suite, disposables, WALANT (Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet) or WAVR anesthesia, and 60 days of post-operative follow-up for the normal needs of recovery from your surgery. New or unrelated problems encountered during follow-up — for example, a condition in your other hand — are separately charged. Pathology, implants, imaging, splints, and prescriptions are billed separately when required. Heritage prices are set individually for each procedure by Dr. Clarkson and are not purely formula-driven.
Important for insured patients considering paying cash: amounts paid directly to Heritage typically do not count toward your insurance deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. If you expect to meet your deductible this year through other care, using your insurance at an in-network facility may cost you less overall even if the sticker price is higher. And you don't have to leave us to do that: Dr. Clarkson also operates at ambulatory surgical centers and hospital outpatient departments, so if the insurance route is right for you, we can provide your surgery in those settings for your convenience. We're happy to help you think this through at consultation.
Combining procedures in one visit: when more than one surgery is performed in the same office visit — including additional digits or fingers of the same condition — the most valuable is charged at full price and each additional surgery at 50% — and the combined surgical total for a single visit will never exceed $5,000.
Some more complex procedures require the main operating room; those cases are priced at consultation rather than by transparent bundle.
